Insomnia Doodling – SOUL SELF PORTRAIT

This is a very special insomnia doodle. It started out as another sugar skull that began with the idea of having a heart in the eye. But then it quickly turned into its own thing, more of a free-form doodle built around this idea of a heart. At some point, as my mind was being ravaged by sleep deprivation and insomnia, I realized that what I was doing was drawing my soul. And that’s the name of this particular doodle, SOUL SELF PORTRAIT. There is a very complex story being told within these lines, shapes, and colors…the story of my soul. Maybe I’ll write it all down someday.

Insomnia Doodling – Sugar Skull Series #7: A Self Portrait

It’s difficult to explain my process when it comes to doing these Sugar Skulls. But what I can say is that the process of making this one was very different from all the others. It started out the same, with the exception of the fact that I wanted to give this particular skull a pair of glasses…but something happened very early in the process, and I think it was more than simply insomnia or sleep deprivation. At some point, it became clear to me that what I was making was a self portrait. Yes, this is a self portrait. If anyone wants me to explain the meaning behind all of the shapes and imagery that can be found in this skull, as well as the symbolism and meaning within the colors and the placement of the colors, feel free to ask me if we ever meet in person.

Here We Go…

Getting things together so I can start shipping copies of The Monster of Blackenstyne (not to be confused with Blackenstein) to everyone who supported the Kickstarter campaign. “This is my favorite of self publishing,” that you’ll never hear me say. Ever.

On the Road and Out of Commission…

I haven’t posted in a while, and for that I apologize. I’ve been on the road for work, dealing with the Kickstarter campaign, and I’m sick. I’ve got some exciting new stuff that will start showing up next week. Until then, keep on keepin’ on.

More of The Monster…

In case you didn’t know…there’s more to than the one-shot comic currently crowd-funding on Kickstarter. TMoB is going to be an on-going series of short stories that will first appear on my Patreon, and then be collected in physical comics. The first short story is drawn by none other than Marcelo Di Chiara, and will debut this summer. What you’re seeing here is a partial glimpse from that story. By backing the Kickstarter campaign, you are not only supporting the one-shot comic, you’re helping me cover the cost of paying my art team and editor. The same is true if you’re subscribing to my Patreon. The crowdfunding campaign ends this coming Monday, which means there’s still time to show your support.
